Ann Johns

November 28, 1941 — August 14, 2018

Ann Johns, 76, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2018. She was born on November 28, 1941 in Blackfoot, Idaho to Amelia and Austin Hammond. She was the oldest child and had 4 brothers and 1 sister. Ann married Ralph Johns on November 23, 1966 and they were married for 50 years. Together they raised a combined family of 9 children. Although Ann spent most of her childhood in Goshen, Idaho, it was while attending primary in Basalt that she discovered her love of music. She loved listening to the songs about the gospel of Jesus Christ and desired to learn how to create such beautiful music. She realized this goal by becoming a talented pianist and organist and devoted years of service as an organist for worship services. She loved to share music with others and spent numerous hours teaching piano and organ lessons to all who wanted to learn, especially the children who lived close by. Ann loved, cared for and nurtured children throughout her adult life, especially the neighborhood children. It was not unusual for a young neighborhood child to knock on her door to see if she could play. During high school, Ann developed an interest in science and wanted to learn about everything she could. Ann recalled wanting to be a nurse as a young child. She would realize this dream after raising her children by earning a masters degree in nursing from Idaho State University. She worked at Bannock Regional Medical Center in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the newborn nursery and the maternity ward, where she enjoyed helping the little babies and their mothers. During this time, she became a Lamaze instructor and loved helping parents prepare for the birth of their children. She also became a certified diabetic educator where she loved helping people learn to manage their diabetes. Ann was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong testimony of the Savior. She ambitiously participated in family history work by spending countless hours searching for her family ancestors and she loved sharing their life stories with her children and grandchildren. For several years, she enthusiastically served multiple Family History Missions helping others discover their own family heritage. Ann is survived by her children, Bonnie Upshaw, Kent Johns (Cora), Barbara Franzen (Jason), Becky Kirkman (Vashon), Susan Lakey (Don), Janice Arnold (Jay), Vernon Johns, Jerry Johns and Carol Yokoda; her four brothers, Dean, Dale, Marvin and Brent; and her sister, ArLynn; 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; her parents; her grandsons, Matthew Johns and Daniel Upshaw; and her sons-in-law, Don Upshaw and Eiji Yokoda. Services will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 South 4 th Ave, Pocatello, ID. The viewing will be at 1:00 pm followed by the funeral at 2:00 pm.
