David Carl Mortensen, 69, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2017 at a local care facility.
David was born January 14, 1948 in Santa Ana, CA to Marion Leslie Mortensen and Mary Katherine Chrisman followed shortly by his twin Daniel Lee Mortensen (Being born first was something David never let Daniel forget). They grew up with their older brother, Gregory. When David was about six years old, his father chose to walk away from his marriage and family. This created a deep hardship for the young family. In time, Mary met and later married Maxwell "Max" Symmonds. He had a son, Michael and they added three more children to the family: Dawn, Shawn and Katherine. Both of David's fathers were in the Air Force and the family moved around a lot. The family lived in Panama; Clarkdale, AZ; Lake Wilson, MN; Albuquerque, NM; and Nauvoo, IL.
When he didn't immediately marry after his mission David began fretting that his wife had been killed in the war in heaven. While living in Salt Lake City, UT David was introduced to a beautiful gal by some mutual friends. On June 16, 1973, he married Wendie Ann Bosch in the St. George LDS Temple for time and all eternity. They were blessed with five children, 3 boys and 2 girls. David had a deep love for his family, the Lord, all kinds of music, teaching, and a never ending thirst for knowledge. He had a fantastic mind and was knowledgeable about many things, great and small. (Just ask anyone who played Trivial Pursuit with him).
David was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a full-time mission to Scotland, and held various callings in Primary, Scouting, and teaching. His favorite calling was as an officiator in the St. George LDS Temple.
David was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother Michael, oldest sister Katherine that died at 18 months old, and two grandbabies.
David is survived by his wife of nearly 45 years, Wendie; five children, Joseph (Terry) Mortensen; Jennifer (Bart) Jenson; Samuel Mortensen; Rachel Mortensen; Jonathan (Lyn) Mortensen; nine grandchildren; brothers, Greg (Meshell) Mortensen; Daniel (Patricia) Mortensen; stepfather, Maxwell Symmonds, half siblings Dawn Brown, Shawn (Judi) Symmonds, Kathrine (Tim) Green, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for David will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the Alameda 7th Ward LDS Chapel, 930 E. Alameda, with Bishop Derk Mitton conducting. A viewing will be held from 7-9 PM at Wilks Funeral Home, 211 W. Chubbuck Road, and one hour prior to the services at the church. His interment will follow the services at Whitney Cemetery.
