Elwin H. Anderson

Elwin Harry Anderson , 94 , a long time resident of Pocatello, passed away Monday August 3, 2009. He was born on Nov. 28, 1914, in a one-room log house to Harry and Ethel Davis Anderson in Egin, Idaho, seven miles west of St. Anthony. He was the second child of six brothers two sisters. Elwin graduated from Pocatello High School in 1935 and then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific Theater. He was then sent by the Navy to Iowa State College at Ames and graduated in electrician 3rd class. He also served on the Ship USS Finnegan , as the ships barber. There were times he was able to get out of hard duty because he had to cut the Captains hair.
Elwin served the Northern States Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was district president for the northern half of Illinois. Elwin has served in many church positions, including Mutual president, Boy Scout leader and counselor in the Bishopric. Elwin and Fern served together as Stake Missionaries and Cafeteria hosts in the Idaho Falls Temple.

The Anderson family moved to Pocatello in 1923, where they started the Anderson Dairy. Elwin started delivering milk at the age of 13 throughout Pocatello and Inkom area. Elwin started working for Rocky Mountain Dairy and started Anderson‘s Landscaping and Topsoil. He worked at his landscaping business until he was 87 years old. You can see his rock walls around 19th Street and ISU. When he retired from the dairy he went to work at Union Pacific Railroad as a carman and retired in 1979. Elwin enjoyed baseball and volleyball. His favorite hobbies are hunting, camping, and reading. He liked to keep his mind active by memorizing. He was active in the Breakfast Toastmasters Club of Pocatello.

Elwin met Fern L. Romriell his sweetheart of 61 years at a dance hall (which is now the Deleta Skating Rink). They were married July 18 1947 in the Idaho Falls Temple. Together they raised seven daughters and three sons.

Elwin is survived by his 3 sons, Clark (Tracy) Anderson, Chubbuck; Keith (Katrina) Anderson, Pocatello; Kelly (Teresa) Anderson, Tyhee ; 7 daughters, Linda (Kent) Hansen, Pocatello; Nancy (Philip) Crockett, Syracuse, Utah; Cheryl (Hayden) Lambson, Pocatello; Sheila (Allen) Griffiths, Pocatello; Karla (Phillip) Jones, Orem, Utah; Yvette (Merlin) Miller, Chubbuck; Lisa (Javier) Vargas, Highland, Utah, 2 brothers Dwaine (Renee) Anderson, Pocatello; Gayle (Dorothy) Anderson, Tyhee; a sister Ardella (LaMar) Long, Pocatello; 62 grandchildren and 98 great-grandchildren, with two on the way. He is preceded in death by his wife Fern, his parents, 5 brothers and 1 sister.
