Hilbert E. "Herbie" Heer

d. January 7, 2011

Hilbert Erwin Heer "Herbie", 88, of Pocatello, passed away Friday, January 7, 2011 at the Idaho State Veterans Home due to natural causes. He was born August 27, 1922 in Freeman, South Dakota, son of Fredrick and Mary Heer. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged on August 28th 1943. After the war he married Delphia Marie Sasser June 19, 1946. Hilbert and Delphia had four children, Darlene, Brent, Erwin, and Roger. Delphia passed away July 30, 1979. A few years later on January 8, 1981 he married Shirley Wyatt in Pocatello, Idaho. She had five children, Michael, Susan, Kelli, Jon, and Myllissa. Herbie and Shirley would have celebrated their 30 year anniversary January 8th 2011. Herb worked at the Experiment station in Aberdeen, the Naval Ordinance Plant (NOP) in Pocatello, but most of his career was spent working at the City of Pocatello Water Department. He retired after 30 years working there at age 62 in 1984. He had always had a part time job on the side and continued working after retirement for Greene's Plumbing, Remo's and doing grounds work for the LDS church. He was a member of the American Legion and serviced many of his comrades in the military honor guard over the years. In Herbie's life he had been a long time member of both the Lutheran and the LDS churches. Since residing in the Veteran's Home he loved to attend the non-denominational services provided there by Chaplain Steve. Herbie had a love for music and learned to play the accordion at an early age. He loved playing the accordion in bands and played with a band for a number of years at Lava Hot Springs early in his first marriage. Then played with several other bands throughout his life. He was remembered for saying he "put a lot of food on the table with this accordion". He also had a passion for fishing and loved gardening and camping. No family reunion was complete without hearing that familiar accordion music. For that and any other precious moments he will be dearly missed. Herbie resided at the Idaho State Veterans Home for the last 8 years of his life where he received excellent care from their wonderful staff. He will be remembered by them, and many others, for his big sweet smile. He is survived by his wife Shirley Heer, Pocatello, his children, Darlene (Randy) Babbitt, Ririe, Id, Brent (Margo) Heer, Pocatello, Id., Roger Heer, Pocatello, his step-children, Michael (Merry) Titus, Wenatchee,Wa., Susan (Marvin) Dixon), Pocatello, Id., Kelli (Eric) Jackson, Blackfoot, Id., Jon (Monica) Titus, Pocatello, Id., Myllissa (Dusty) Pena, Pocatello, Id., 8 grandchildren, 16 step grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 13 step great-grandchildren.
