Laroy Ariel Stone

d. April 22, 2016

LaRoy Ariel Stone was born to David Ariel Stone & Edna Louise Gilgen on March 28, 1930 in Daniels, Idaho near Malad. He was the oldest of four boys; LaRoy, Clyde, and twins, Paul & Carl. Clyde passed away in 2008. As the family was growing up the boys; Roy, Clyde, Paul and Carl, would go deer hunting with their Dad. Roy always got his deer. The love of hunting continued through the years, along with fishing which he especially enjoyed with his grandson, Paul. His mothers family was from Switzerland and he was very proud of that. He had hoped that one day he could "yodel" in the Alps. LaRoy was a member of the LDS church & served in the High Priest group and Sunday school. He always looked forward each month to his home teachers, Owen & Jerry King, to visit with him. They remained life-long friends. He worked in Sun Valley during his younger years & often told of the celebrities he met up there while skiing & working at the lodge. He also worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. LaRoy proudly served his country during the Korean War as a Corporal in the tank division in the US Army stationed in Alaska. LaRoy married his first wife, Lily Wade Warner, in Heyburn, Idaho in 1951 and to that union his beloved daughter, Vickey Lee was born. She was his pride and joy. LaRoy & Lily later divorced. Vickey married James Carroll and had 3 children; Jennifer Hill, Daviena "Jayhmie" Maquiola & Paul Carroll. Vickey passed away in 2011 & that deeply saddened Roy that he outlived her. A young widow with five children, by the name of Merla Kidd Fries, came into Roys life and later became his wife. Merlas children are Kay Fries, Michael Fries, Kathy Hunter, Calvin Fries (deceased) and Tanya Reyes. Merla passed away in 2004. LaRoy worked for Simplot until retirement and he & Merla owned several rental properties that kept them busy. They also traveled around in their RV to many places and even took a cruise to Alaska. After Merla passed away, LaRoy kept busy by watching the softball games around town, dancing at the Senior Center, spending time with family, eating his special pork chops at the Mandarin House, clam chowder at Uncle Jims & pizza at Pizza Hut, tending to his remaining rentals, collecting coins, giving Stacey & the girls at the bank a hard time and just generally puttering around in his little truck. With declining health & not being able to care for himself, he went to live at Ridgewind Assisted Living in Chubbuck. He made many friends there & started a "Coffee-n-Cocoa Club" with Don, Rex, Gloria, Kenna & Suzy to name a few. They would gather about 8:00 at night and chat, do puzzles and drink their hot beverages. LaRoy always looked forward to the visits by the Old Time Fiddlers but didnt care for the food. LaRoy dealt with many health issues. He had just turned 86 last month. His body was tired & his spirit was ready to go home. Thank you to the staff at Ridgewind & Encompass for their patience & care especially Kandi, Phillip, Danielle, the gals in Memory Care & Tia. Thank you to the 59th Ward for their love & concern. Thank you to Megan & her family, Lance Perkins & Tom Holmes for their patience & care for LaRoy. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a Veterans organization or LDS charity of your choice.
