Rebecca Shaw Darley Packer, 98, of Chubbuck, Idaho passed away on December 5, 2013.
Rebecca was born March 26, 1915, in Wellsville, Utah, the second daughter of Elizabeth Ann Simpson Shaw and George Thirkell Darley. She attended elementary school in Wellsville, Utah and high school at South Cache in Hyrum, Utah. After graduating from Utah State University in 1937 she was called to serve a mission in the Texas-Louisiana mission. It was here that she met her future husband, Vaughn Packer who was also serving a mission in Texas. After Rebecca returned home, she began teaching at North Cache High School in Richmond, Utah. The next year Rebecca and Vaughn began courting and were married on November 29, 1940. Over the next 10 years they welcomed 4 children: Vonda, John, Sherman and Darla, into their family onto a little farm near Franklin, Idaho. IN 1959 they sold the farm and moved into Franklin.
Rebecca was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many callings in the church. She especially loved doing French and Italian extraction for the church. In 1981, Vaughn passed away and in 1989 Rebecca was called to serve another mission for the church. This time it was in San Diego where she learned to love the Hmong, Loatian and Vietnamese families that she worked with. Long after she returned she continued to correspond with the elder and sister missionaries and the members that she had worked with and loved.
Rebecca has always been a hard worker. She loved to make quilts, entering many in the fair and quilt shows. She enjoyed doing a variety of kinds of handwork, including: quilting, applique, drawn work, needlepoint, cross-stitch, cutwork, crewel and crochet. She loved entering her handwork in the fair and continued until the year she died. She made many gifts for her family and loved giving small gifts to each grandchild and great grandchild every year.
In June of 2004 she moved to Chubbuck, Idaho. Although it was hard to leave her home in Franklin she learned to love the people in her new ward. She was always involved and loved the new families she met there.
Rebecca is survived by: her 4 children, Vonda (Don) Bahr of Provo, Utah; John (Barbara) Packer of Franklin, Idaho; Sherman (Janine) of Sandy, Utah; Darla (Brent) Grigg of Chubbuck, Idaho; 25 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren and 4 great great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her husband; 4 brothers; 1 sister; 1 grandchild and 1 great-grandchild.
