Richard Merrill Howell

November 5, 1947 — May 1, 2022

Richard Merrill Howell, 74, passed away at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello, Idaho on May 1, 2022, with his family by his side.



Richard was born at the old Iron County Hospital in Cedar City, Utah.  He was the first child of C. Merrill & Carol Perry Howell.  He was raised in Cedar City, UT and grew up on 100 East, on the East side of town known as “Dog Town” by the old locals.  He graduated from Cedar City High School in 1966, and then attended CSU in Cedar City, UT . He then attended Utah State University in Logan, UT were he graduated with a Mechanical Engineering Degree.


 


He worked for the Department of Transportation during the summers and after graduation. Richard was assigned to the construction of  I-70 in Utah. He accepted a position as an Engineer at the Atomic Energy Commission at the ARCO facility in Idaho. For the last 37 years he was a trusted investment advisor to many clients. Many of his clients have become his dearest and most valued friends.  At the time of his passing he was a Senior Vice President with the HK Investment Group at Stifel Investments in  Pocatello. 


 


Richard met the love of his life Gloria Griffel, in Pocatello Idaho and they were married in the St George Temple, August 17th 1973. They made their home in Pocatello, Idaho where they enjoyed their successful careers and many wonderful friends and associates.  Richard and Gloria were avid travelers and had many wonderful adventures through the years.


 


Richard had a keen intellect and a wide variety of interests.  There was nothing he could not figure out.  He loved motorcycles, cars and all things with motors and wheels.  He loved to fish, and spend time with Gloria at their cabin and in their home in Hawaii.  He volunteered for many projects to better the community he lived in.


 


Richard and Gloria cared for their fur babies and many stray animals.  Richard loved his pets. He has a kind heart and a soft spot for all of God’s creatures.


 


Richard was a member of  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He served in numerous callings in the LDS Church.


 


Richard is survived by his wife Gloria, his sister Marilyn (Smith) of Apopka, Florida and his brother David Howell (Janelle) of Mesquite, Nevada.  He was admired by his nephews: Nick Howell, Nathan Howell, and nieces: Shauna Smith and Mindy Howell, and great nieces and nephews: Madelyn, Mila, Merrick, Brooklyn and Ian Howell.


 


He was preceded in death by his father C Merrill Howell and mother Carol Perry Howell, and his brother-in-law Jack Smith.


 


Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 7th at 11:00am at Wilks Funeral Home, 211 West Chubbuck Rd.  A visitation will be held Friday,  May 6, 2022 from 5:00-7:00pm at Wilks Funeral Home.  Interment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery, in Pocatello Id.
