Robert Maclure

July 30, 1922 — June 12, 2011

Robert G. Maclure passed away at the age of 88 on June 12, 2011, after a brief illness. He was born in Nassau, Bahamas, in 1922, and when he was two years old his family moved to Miami, Florida. He proudly served his country in the Army Corps of Engineers, during WWII. The government granted Robert his U.S. citizenship during his military service.

After the War, Robert returned to Miami, where he met his wife, Annie. It was there where they raised their three children and enjoyed the life that Florida offered. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier. When Annie became ill and needed extra care, they moved to Chubbuck, ID, where their son, Steve, had set down his roots with his family. This change of scenery was an adventure for the both of them. Robert never cared for Idaho's cold weather. He often said, “There are two seasons in Idaho: Winter and the Fourth of July.”

Robert had a way with plants and especially enjoyed tending to his wide variety of orchids. He also loved animals and was known to take in and care for injured cats and dogs. He appreciated the simpler things in life such as reading a good book, listening to music, walking in the Everglades, and shrimping for “the biggest shrimp you've ever seen.” Robert always had a story to tell to anyone who wanted to hear. (Those who knew him best had probably heard his stories more than once.) He was very fond of sharing his memories of growing up in Florida and of his service in the military.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Annie, and his son, Richard. Robert is survived by his son, Steven (Bonnie) Maclure; his daughter, Susan Maclure; his granddaughter and great-grandson, Amie and Brandon Maclure-Duong; and his grandson, Jesse Maclure. His family was fortunate enough to be able to come together and be with him before he passed away. The family will gather at a later date to celebrate his life.
