Shirley Mae Hartley

Shirley Mae Gardner Hartley, 89 passed away on November 16, 2020.

Shirley was born to Howard and Louise Ziegler Gardner in Pocatello, Idaho. The family moved to Grace, Idaho where Shirley started her schooling. The family later moved back to Pocatello where Shirley attended Irving Jr. High where she was in band and finished her schooling at Pocatello High School. Shirley was the third child in her family. Her siblings are Peggy (Eddy) Pearce, Don (Sylvia) Gardner, Dorothy (Doyle) Chatterton, and Neil (Carrie) Gardner. Shirley and Dorothy were less than a year apart and grew up as twins, even creating their own language together. Shirley and Dorothy enjoyed playing games together and going to the movies on Saturday for 11 cents a ticket. The two also enjoyed renting bikes for 25 cents and riding them around town. Their love for one another stayed constant throughout their lives.

Shirley met Peter "Chris" Norgaard and on January 23, 1948 they were married. Shirley and Chris had six children: four boys Rick (Angelyn) Norgaard, Brent (Linda) Norgaard, Lynn Norgaard, and Peter (Linda) Norgaard, and two girls Judy (Brad) Keith and Cherie (Sydney) Bristol. Shirley and Chris were later divorced. Shirley then met and married Steve Aldrich and they resided in Yakima Washington. After Steve passed away, Shirley met and married Perry Hartley and they lived together in Beatrice Nebraska. Following Perry's death, Shirley moved back to Pocatello to be with her children.

Shirley loved playing cards and on Saturday she would play Hand and Foot with her card club. They often laughingly complained about how lucky she was. Shirley also enjoyed spending time with her family, putting puzzles together, playing Bingo, and tole painting. She collected bear and chef figurines which lead to Shirley and Judy spending countless hours shopping to find more figurines to add to her décor.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Howard and Louise, brothers Don and Neil, sister Peggy, son Peter, son-in-law Sydney, and four grandchildren. She will be missed by her sister Dorothy, children Rick, Brent, Lynn, Judy, and Cherie, 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

No formal services will be held.
