Carl Daniel Shaffer

June 8, 1945 — September 5, 2025

Inkom

Carl "Dan" Shaffer, 80, of Inkom, passed away peacefully at his home on September 5, 2025. Dan was born on June 8, 1945, to Daniel Isaac and Helen Jesse Grotbo Shaffer. Dan was the third in line of four children. He was blessed to have an older brother and best friend, Edward, a sister, Wanda and was later given a younger sister, Barbara. The family grew up in Inkom, Idaho.

Dan was an active young man, participating in basketball, football, track and boxing for Marsh Valley High School. Dan was always so proud that he had never lost a match in boxing, and that he was able to play on two basketball teams until he was 45. Dan excelled in all sports, and was given a full ride scholarship to Dixie State University to play football. Dan declined the opportunity to go to college, and began working for the County.

Soon after graduating in 1964, Dan married Larita Tippits. The two were blessed with four children, Wendy, Tres, Danny and Troy. The two later divorced.

In 1964, Dan began working as a laborer for the J.R. Simplot Company. He continued there, working his way up to a Supervisor. It was also there, that he met the love of his life, Natalie Nord. The two married in 1989, and were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City, Utah temple. The two of them were blessed with one child together, Danielle.

Dan retired from Simplot in 2001, and that is when life truly began. Dan got to do all of the things that he hadn't previously been able to do. He chased Danielle from sport to sport, never missing a single event. He also finally got the chance to go fishing and hunting as much as he wanted to do.

Dan loved fishing! From the Portneuf River, to Henry's Lake in Island Park, to the deep ocean waters of Alaska, he enjoyed it all. For the past few years, you could find him and his grandson, Payton, fishing along side one another, generally at their fishing spot in Lava.

Dan also loved to hunt. His love for hunting began at a young age, and only increased through the years. Most of Dan's hunting stories involved the same beloved people, his brother Eddie, his son, Danny, his nephews Max and Rex, and later in life, his son-in-law Shane and daughter Danielle. The memories made in those mountains will be cherished by all who were honored enough to share them.

Dan loved his family. He felt so blessed to be able to chase his grandkids from sport to sport and watch their successes. Dan never missed a basketball, football, track or singing event. He was always there to tell them how proud he was of their performance.

Dan was proceeded in death by his parents, brother Eddie, sister Wanda Burrup, mother and father in-law, Gaylia and Reed Nord, sister-in-law and brother-in law, Kathy and Bill Jenkins, brother-in-law, Ryan Nord.

He is survived by his eternal companion and wife, Natalie (Nord) Shaffer, children, Wendy Russell, Tres Thorpe (Reed), Danny (Nikki), Troy (Mindy), and Danielle Hamilton (Colter). His grandchildren, Cody Edmonds, Britney Armstrong, Cameron Anderson, Tasia Aguinaga, Shantae Greene, Justin Shaffer, Ashley Shaffer, Ricky Shaffer, Courtney Dial, Jeanaelie Shaffer, Payton Shaffer, Victoria Hamilton, Laynee Hamilton and Olivia Hamilton, 20 great-grandchildren, sister Barbara Ward and sister-in-law, Beatrice.

Dan will be so greatly missed by his family and friends, but what a reunion it must be. Until we meet again, we will keep making you proud.
