Carlton “Carl” I. Tanaka, 78, passed away peacefully at home in Chubbuck, Idaho, on May 8, 2026, surrounded by the love and presence of his family. His passing leaves a deep void, but his legacy of strength, kindness, and devotion will live on in all who knew and loved him.
Carl was born on October 31, 1947, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Itsuo “Joe” and Josephine Tanaka. He was raised in Kaneohe alongside his brothers (Gerald and Alvin) and his sisters (Deborah, Audrey, and Louise). Growing up in Hawaii shaped Carl’s deep appreciation for family, community, and hard work—values that would guide him throughout his life.
He graduated from St. Louis School in 1965 before venturing to the mainland to attend Columbia Basin College. There, Carl distinguished himself as both a scholar and an athlete, excelling in wrestling and football. He continued his academic and athletic journey at Idaho State University, where he earned his degree in 1969 while continuing to compete and succeed in both sports. Earning All American status in wrestling. In 1973 he advanced his education by obtaining a master’s degree in physical education from Idaho State University. His dedication, discipline, and competitive spirit earned him lasting recognition, culminating in his induction into the Idaho State University Sports Hall of Fame in 1990, an honor he accepted with humility and pride.
On January 6, 1973, Carl married the love of his life, Charline Ann Grace. Their marriage was the foundation of everything he held dear. Together, they built a life filled with purpose, raising their family with strong values, hard work, loyalty, and laughter. Carl’s love for Charline was constant and deep, and his greatest joy came from the life they created together. As a husband, father, and provider, he led with strength, compassion, and an unshakable sense of responsibility.
Carl began his professional life with Garrett Freight Lines before embarking on a long and rewarding career with Union Pacific Railroad as a Locomotive Engineer. Over the course of 37 years, he built a career defined by hard work, reliability, and pride in a job he truly loved. He was respected by his colleagues for his steady presence, strong work ethic, and commitment to excellence.
Carl was a lifelong wrestling enthusiast whose passion for wrestling extended far beyond his own accomplishments. For many years, he generously volunteered as a wrestling coach at Highland High School, dedicating his time and energy to mentoring young athletes. He found great fulfillment in helping others grow not only as competitors, but as individuals instilling discipline, confidence, and perseverance in generations of wrestlers. Carl was also a member of the International Karate League and passed his skills and knowledge on to numerous students. In his later years, he continued his commitment to serving others as a volunteer swim coach for Special Olympics. To many, he was more than a coach; he was a role model, a mentor, and a source of encouragement.
Outside of his career and coaching, Carl found his greatest happiness in being with his family. He cherished time spent outdoors, especially hunting and fishing with his sons and grandsons. These moments were more than pastimes; they were opportunities to teach, bond, and create lasting traditions. His enduring presence, steady guidance, and shared laughter during these times will be treasured memories for his family for years to come.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Itsuo “Joe” and Josephine Tanaka. He is survived by his wife, Charline Tanaka; his children, Itsy (Missy) Tanaka, Candon (Chrissy) Tanaka, and Caitlinn (Jarred) Scott; and his “Hānai Son,” Russell (Kim) Newman.
