Charlene Jo Tovey

September 22, 1953 — July 24, 2025

Pocatello

Charlene Jo Winn Tovey passed away on July 24, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born September 22, 1953, in Idaho Falls, Idaho to Luella (Holman) Winn and Lloyd Junior Winn. She was the second of 5 children and grew up in Idaho Falls, graduating from Skyline High School in 1971. She met Rod Tovey in Provo, Utah while attending BYU; they were married in the Idaho Falls Temple in 1976. After Rod completed his education at the University of Idaho, they moved to Pocatello where they raised their family.

Char was a licensed residential appraiser and she and Rod owned Homestead Appraisal. They worked together for over 30 years and completed thousands of appraisals across southern Idaho. Char was very involved with local politics and held numerous positions over the years, including being elected as the Bannock County Republican Chairman. She helped organize dozens of political events and fundraisers and helped many of our local political leaders with their elections. She encouraged many people to get involved with local politics and considered such work an important part of our civic duty.

Char was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She had a strong testimony of her Heavenly Father and of Jesus Christ, and she served in numerous positions throughout her life. She especially enjoyed going to girl’s camp with the young women and was exceptional at planning and helping with those trips. She was also an excellent seamstress and was part owner of Assemble and helped produce “Scrooge’s Christmas-A Theatrical Ballet.” She loved doing craft projects with her grandchildren and everyone looked forward to her homemade pies and candy at the holidays.

Char was proceeded in death by her husband, Rodney M Tovey, her parents, and her brother, David Winn. Char is survived by her children and their spouses: Matthew Lloyd Tovey (Amy Geiger), Terrel Ned Tovey (Serena Lloyd), and Tara Tovey Burrell (Davey Burrell) all of Pocatello. She is also survived by her six granddaughters and one grandson: Katherine (Tovey) Tindall, Madelyn Tovey, Sophia Tovey, Hadlie Burrell, Caroline Burrell, Isabella Tovey, and Taliesin Tovey.

The Tovey family would like to thank all the family, friends, physicians, and caregivers that supported Char in the last several months of her life. She will be greatly missed but we are glad that she is free of her mortal struggles.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 135 S. 7th Avenue, Pocatello, ID.
