With hearts full of love and gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of our dear Mother, Charlotte Mullen Hughes on Sunday, October 12, 2025 at the age of 92.
Charlotte was born July 9, 1933 to Wesley Eugene Mullen and Aleen Peterson Mullen in Pocatello ID. She grew up in Pocatello living in her grandparents’ home with her mother and older brother, Wesley Eugene Mullen Jr as well as her mother’s younger sister, Frances, who was affectionally known as “Aunt Nana”. Her parents divorced when she was young so her grandparents helped to raise her. After many years of not knowing her father, she reconnected with him and they were able to develop a good, loving relationship.
She attended school in Pocatello and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1951 where her senior class voted her “Miss Music of 1951”. After graduation she attended BYU where she majored in music and minored in business. Music was an important part of her life. She learned to play the piano at a young age and taught herself how to play the old pump organ in her church. She served many years as a ward organist throughout her life. She was a very accomplished pianist and highly sought after accompanist as she could play anything and knew how to anticipate what the conductor or performer was going to do. She worked with some great directors over the years; Crawford Gates, Ferris Edgely and Larry Anderson just to name a few. She was the accompanist for the LaDonna Singers and Camerata Singers and enjoyed that very much. She also taught piano for over 20 years in her home. She loved helping her students develop a real love for music.
In 1950, she met the cute blue-eyed, blonde boy that lived next door and it was love at first sight. Edward “Allen” Hughes quickly stole her heart and they began dating in the Fall of 1952. Allen proposed on February 13, 1953 and they were married July 3, 1953 in the Pocatello LDS Institute. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on October 27, 1961. They were blessed with 6 beautiful children: Julie, David, Karen, Marianne, Rob and Barbie and later 20 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Charlotte and Allen built their life together in Pocatello. Allen built their home for them in 1959 where they raised their family and spent the rest of their lives together. They loved working along side each other beautifying their yard. Their hard worked paid off when on 2 separate occasions they won the Golden arrow award and the Neighbor Works Curb Appeal Award.
She worked for the Pocatello School district for 17 years before retiring in July of 2000. Fifteen of those years were spent at Highland High School where she worked as the athletic secretary and then the head secretary. She loved her time at Highland. Even though she graduated as a Poky Indian, she had a real love for her Highland Ram family. She cherished the lifelong friendships she made working there. She was lucky to be able to work with her childhood best friend Helen, who she remained close to until their deaths just 1 month apart.
Charlotte served in numerous callings as an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She loved her Savior and had a firm testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the plan of salvation.
She had a great love for genealogy and temple work. She enjoyed researching her ancestors and being able to do temple work for them. She was so excited to have a temple in Pocatello and loved worshiping there.
We would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Monte Vista Hills, The Gables Assisted Living and Heritage Home Health and Hospice for their loving care for mom over the last few months.
Charlotte is survived by her children Julie (Sam) Chaney, David, Karen (Dave) Sullivan, Marianne (Brian) Richardson, Rob (Pam), and Barbie (Dan) Stoddard, and her many grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband Allen, her parents, her brother, an aunt and one great-grandson.
