Douglas Halliwell Brick

Douglas Halliwell Brick – Pocatello ID – disappeared on October 12,1973 while he was a student at the University of Utah. It is believed that he died shortly after his disappearance in the hills behind the University. Recently, in the fall of 2024, hunters discovered a human skull. Comparison of the DNA of the skull with that of his sister confirmed the remains were Douglas. At the time of his passing, he was survived by his mother Donna Halliwell Brick, brother David Harold Brick, sister Susanne Paula Brick, uncles Jack Halliwell, Jr. and Edward Brick and aunts Ruth Brick Stevens, Helen Brick McInally, and Joan Halliwell Simmons. He was predeceased by his father Francis Harold Brick and aunt Jean Halliwell Olson. All of Doug’s relatives except David and Susanne have passed away during the period he went missing.

Douglas was born August 29, 1950, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Donna Halliwell Brick and Francis Harold Brick. He grew up with a brother and sister who provided him with guidance through the challenges of being the youngest sibling.

Douglas attended Pocatello High School and graduated with honors from the class of 1968. He belonged to Key Club, German Club and Boy’s Council. He presented the benediction at graduation. During the summers, his love of nature landed him a job with the forest service. After high school, he entered the University of Utah on a fellowship. There he majored in physics and maintained a high-grade average. He disappeared during his senior year.

The story of Doug’s disappearance for such a long time and the sudden discovery and identification of his skull 52 years later, drew national attention. His story appeared in several newsfeeds to be read by people all over the United States. Google searches provide numerous links to these publications.

Douglas’s remains would never have been found except for the persistence of the University of Utah police department. Their dedication to this formerly cold case brought peace to the Brick Family.

Visiting hours will be from 5 pm – 7 pm on Thursday, August 28, 2025 at Wilks Funeral Home, 211 W. Chubbuck Road, Chubbuck, ID. A memorial service will be held at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 248 N. Arthur Avenue, Pocatello, ID at 11am on Friday, August 29, 2025. Following the memorial, a graveside service will be provided at Mountain View Cemetery, 1520 S. 5th Avenue, Pocatello.
