Ernest Leon Tolman

October 19, 1944 — June 1, 2025

Ernest Leon Tolman, 80, passed away peacefully at home on June 1, 2025.

Ernest was born on October 19, 1944. His parents were Samuel and June Tolman. Ernie was born and raised in Pocatello, Idaho, along with his sister, Joy and brother, Steve.

Ernie enjoyed and played baseball, football, track and wrestling for Pocatello High School. He graduated from Pocatello High School with the Class of 1963. Ernie served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scotland which he enjoyed and loved returning home from serving his mission. Once home, he attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. He also attended Idaho State University for his associate’s degree in law enforcement.

Ernie met his wife, Allene Tingey while attending Ricks College. They were married in Cutbank, Montana in May of 1968 by Allene’s Grandpa Tingey. Ernie and Allene were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on May 21, 1968, and were happily married for 57 years.

Ernie worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a carman for over 30 years. He was a strong provider for his family. He loved playing baseball and coached his sons in Little League. He enjoyed fishing and camping. Ernie served in many church callings. He especially loved serving with the youth of the church. He had a special bond with the youth and could connect with them. Ernie had a nickname (Candyman) at church. The youth would come and visit him during church and Ernie would always have candy in his pockets to share with those who came to visit him.

Ernie and Allene were blessed with four children: Colleen and Hakan Sahim, Paul and Megan Tolman, Phillip and Megan Tolman, and Todd and Mandy Tolman. They have 18 beautiful grandchildren and 10 beautiful great grandchildren.

Ernie was a kind and generous man. He loved his family and would do anything for them. He was a safe haven for his family, and we will miss him immensely.

Ernie’s family would like to thank all of those who helped him during his last chapter. We thank you so much.

He is survived by his wife, Allene; brother, Steve (Donna) Tolman; children, Colleen (Hakan) Sahim, Paul (Megan) Tolman, Phillip (Megan) Tolman, and Todd (Mandy) Tolman; 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
