Gary Dahmer

April 11, 1938 — November 6, 2025

Pocatello

Ernest Gary Dahmer, 87, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on April 11, 1938, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the oldest son of Ernest and Martha Lee Dahmer. Dad grew up in Salt Lake City alongside his younger brother Dennis Dahmer. Although they were nine years apart, he had fond memories of his “kid” brother. He spent much of his early childhood at Shriners Hospital, where he underwent treatment to correct his club foot. Despite his disability, Dad dreamed of becoming a Navy SEAL, but was unable to qualify, an experience that shaped his empathy for others. He taught us all an important lesson to never make fun of others, a value rooted in his own life experiences.

After being set up on a blind date he met and later married our mom, Geniel Stewart on February 8, 1958. They spent their first date at Lagoon, a memory that marked the beginning of their love story. Together they raised five children: Maryann Dykman, Bryan Dahmer (deceased), Sherry (Kelly) Murdock, Lori (Leonard) Walker, and Kathy (Tom) Hensley. In his early years, Dad worked as a baker alongside his father at Wyz-Way grocery store. He spent the majority of his career as a carman of the Union Pacific Railroad and retired in 2001.

Dad and our brother Bryan shared a special bond, united by their love of hunting and fishing. Christmas was always a magical time, filled with traditions and warmth we won’t forget. He was famous for making his homeade chili and yummy hot toddies. He always looked forward to a great meal and throughout the years mastered the art of making homemade pizza.

Though dad and mom later divorced, they remained friends and worked together to keep their family closely connected. Dad loved animals and after retirement he spent time volunteering at the Pocatello animal shelter where he met the true love of his life, his dog Patsy. He supported many charitable causes such as St. Judes, Shriners and Free Speech TV. Later in life, he was proud of his democratic values, and we often chuckled at his passionate political rants. His generosity was matched by his strong convictions, qualities that reflected the love he had for his children and grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his son Bryan, his grandson Jason Dykman and his lovable fur babies Patsy and Tilly. He is survived by his four daughters, Maryann, Sherry, Lori, and Kathy, his brother Dennis Dahmer, 13 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Heritage Home Health and Hospice and his incredible caregivers David, Renee, Lane, for their compassionate care and support during his final days. Per Dad’s wishes, no formal services will be held. We deeply appreciate your condolences and loving support during this time.
