Gary E. Thornton

March 10, 1939 — April 22, 2025

Pocatello

Gary Ellis Thornton, 86, of Pocatello, Idaho, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2025, at Quail Ridge Assisted Living, surrounded by his wife, Dora, and daughters, Wendy and Debbie Jo. Born on March 10, 1939, in Afton, Wyoming, Gary was the son of Beth and Ellis Thornton.

Gary grew up in Challis, Idaho, where he formed lifelong bonds with his five brothers, Ivan, Monte, Randy, Chuck, Jay and sister, Darlene, sharing countless adventures. He attended the College of Colorado for one year and later studied at Idaho State University, training as a drafting engineer. Gary began his career with the City of Pocatello in the Sanitation Department, quickly advancing to assistant to the water superintendent. When she retired, he became the Pocatello Water Superintendent, a role he held with dedication until his retirement.

In 1958, Gary met Verdean Burback, and they married in June 1959. They welcomed their daughters, Wendy Thornton, in April 1960, and Debbie Jo, in September 1961. Gary cherished hunting, fishing, and family vacations in the wilderness of Stanley, Challis, and Afton, often joined by his nephews, David and Mike, his niece, Vicky Lynn, or his brothers for memorable trips. Gary and Verdean later divorced, and in December 1976, Gary married Dora Leona Williams, who became his devoted partner and fishing companion.

Gary and Dora spent countless days at North Fork in Salmon, Idaho, reeling in "the big ones" and marveling at wildlife, two of their favorite pastimes. After retirement, they moved to Tillamook, Oregon, so Gary could "fish year-round," a dream he often shared. There, Gary's fishing prowess astonished many, as he caught fish so large they needed no tall tales—photos with Curtis, his frequent fall fishing buddy, proved their legendary hauls. Once Gary had "caught all the big ones," he and Dora returned to Idaho, settling first in Twin Falls before making their final home at Quail Ridge Assisted Living Center in Pocatello. Quail Ridge was more than a living center; it was a true home, thanks to director Ann and her team of caregivers. Gary's unique personality drew everyone close, making him a favorite among the staff, who showered him with hugs and "I love yous." The family is deeply grateful for the love, care, and respect shown to Gary in his final days.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Beth and Ellis Thornton, brothers Ivan and Jay Thornton, and Dora's daughter Sue Ann. He is survived by his wife, Dora Thornton; daughters, Wendy Taft and Debbie Jo; Dora's son, Curtis Williams, his wife Joy Williams; brothers, Monte Thornton, Randy Thornton, and Chuck Thornton; sister, Darlene Parker; seven grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on May 2, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Lava Cemetery in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho.

Gary's adventurous spirit, big heart, teasing wit, and devotion to family will be deeply missed but forever cherished.
