Gregory (Greg) Duane Stoltz, 74, showed extraordinary courage throughout his fight with cancer and passed away Tuesday September 23, 2025 surrounded by loved ones.
Born November 20, 1950, in Monroe, Wisconsin, to B. Jack Stoltz and Norma Joyce Mesenkamp Stoltz. He was baptized into St. John’s United Church of Christ in 1951. Greg was previously married to Marjorie Maag, with whom he shared two twin boys, Nick and Tom. Later he was blessed to find the love of his life Kim Gaskill, with whom he shared many joyful years.
As a child, Greg and his younger sister, Julie, moved often following their father’s employment. They lived in Napa and San Mateo, California, then Trinidad and Pueblo, Colorado, before settling in Pocatello at age 9. Greg graduated from Pocatello High School in 1968.
Throughout his life he was a lover of cars, motorcycles, airplanes, boats, go-carts, drag racing, and engines, engines, engines. He never met an engine he didn’t like and was always trying to build more horsepower. Greg started working at a young age moving pipe and fueling airplanes for the airport in order to save up for a motorcycle and his pilot’s license. A man of many talents, he found great joy in fixing cars, planes, boats and building many engines for speed.
Throughout his career, he worked at Don Davies Foreign Automotive, Self-employed in Stoltz Enterprises, AV Center in Pocatello. Greg was proud to take care of Don Novas’ P-51 mustang, Doug Driscoll’s P-51 mustang, and many aircrafts for Bob and Cindy Nestor. He was head inspector for the T-6 Tech Team, inspecting planes for the Reno Air Races for 5 years. He also became the air boss for the last air show ever held in Pocatello. In 1988 he started at Pocatello Regional Hospital as a Life Flight Mechanic while working at the AV Center. In 1991, Greg purchased and restored Twin Beech plane along with his two sons. Later he became the Director of Maintenance for Life Flight, retiring March 31, 2015. After retiring his desire to tinker never stopped. His passion for building engines continued at Thunder Machine with Bill Schultz. His son and close friends Eric and David Briggs always had a new project.
He especially loved traveling with his wife, Kim, and shared many great adventures exploring destinations such as New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, the Caribbean, Italy, Jamaica, and Cook Islands. Together, they found a special place in Lake Havasu, where they cherished spending their winters. They loved to share their special haven building lasting memories with friends and family. He was devoted to his wife, family, and friends. He was always helping others no matter what he had going on. He found fulfillment in teaching his sons and grandchildren how to drag race.
He is survived by his loving wife and partner of 34 years, Kim (Gaskill), Pocatello, Idaho; sons, Nick (Johnelle), Inkom, Idaho; Tom, Pocatello, Idaho; sister Julie, Pocatello, Idaho; grandson, Bryson, Kuna, Idaho; granddaughter Aften, Inkom, Idaho; grandson Ace, Inkom, Idaho; and great-granddaughter Penellopy, Kuna, Idaho.
