James Washington Shumate

Jul 2, 1948 — Aug 17, 2026

Chubbuck

James Washington Shumate, 78, peacefully passed away at his home in Chubbuck, Idaho, on August 17, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.

James was born on July 2, 1948, to Beatrice Brown and James Shumate in Pearisburg, Virginia.

He attended the Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind growing up and later graduated from Highland High School. During High School, he met Debbie Gates through some mutual friends. They were married in 1969 and just celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. To their union, James and Debbie were blessed with their son Brian.

James worked in steel shops as a welder. He worked for places like B-E, Fought and Co., PCC, and Partners Steel as a machine operator. He enjoyed working as a welding inspector most of his career.

When James wasn’t working, he loved to read, watch the news, travel and spend time in casinos. He was reserved but very trusting of everyone around him.

James found comfort in daily prayer and his faith. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Beatrice and James; and brothers Ronald Cole and Jerry Nelson.

James is survived by his lifelong sweetheart, Debbie; son Brian (Lori) Shumate of Arizona; sister Joan Brown of Texas; and brother-in-law Kenny (Kathy) Gates.
