The Final Chapter of a Master Builder

On July 5, 2026, Jerel T. Potter closed the cover on a beautifully written life and stepped out of his earthly workshop in Sandy, Utah. He was 77 years old, though his spirit remained ever young, fueled by the logic of equations, the smell of fresh sawdust, a deep, lifelong devotion to his faith, and the magic of a well-told story.

Jerel’s journey began on July 26, 1948, in Soda Springs, Idaho, when he was welcomed into the world by his parents, Roy and Alice Potter. Raised amidst the natural wonders of Lava Hot Springs, Jerel learned early on that life was a grand adventure meant to be shaped by one's own hands. After graduating from Marsh Valley High School, he set out to build a legacy rooted in hard work, faith, and family.

To try and pin Jerel down to just one title would be impossible. He was a true Renaissance man, He was a Master Craftsman: As a finished carpenter, Jerel didn't just build structures; he shaped spaces where memories could live. He had a gift for seeing the hidden potential in a raw piece of wood and transforming it into something beautiful. Jerel was The Keeper of Logic: With a Master’s Degree in hand, he spent years teaching mathematics, showing countless students that the world could be understood through precision, patience, and logic. He was A Faithful Servant: Jerel was deeply dedicated to the Lord. His faith was his compass, guiding his hands in all that he built and anchoring his soul in an eternal promise when he was sealed to his forever love, Linda, in the Salt Lake City Temple. He’s The Storyteller: Jerel’s imagination was a kingdom of its own. As an author, he lovingly captured and preserved his own family history, turning heritage into an adventure for generations to come in his book, Villains or Heroes. And An Everyday Adventurer: Whether he was driving a bus or exploring the open spaces of the West, he steered through life with purpose and a quiet strength.

Above all his many creations, Jerel's greatest accomplishment in life was his family. He spent his days surrounded by love, anchored by his devoted wife, Linda.

Jerel’s story lives on through those who carry his legacy forward. He is survived by his children, who inherit his grit, creativity, and wisdom: Sandra Johnson, Jennifer Bruggerman (Derrik), Jeremy Potter (Stephanie), Chris Potter (Emily), Jessica Potter, and Zac Potter. His magic multiplies through his many beloved grandchildren and one precious great-granddaughter, each of whom carries a spark of his brilliant imagination.

He also leaves behind his sisters, Peggy Chandler (Seren), Karen Armstrong (Lee), JoAnn Robinson (Del), and Fawn Potter (Brenda), along with a lifetime of extended family and friends who will forever look at a finely crafted piece of wood or a starry night sky and think of him.

Jerel was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Alice, and his sister, Roene Barfuss (Lester), who undoubtedly welcomed him home to a grand eternal reunion.

The blueprint of Jerel’s life was defined by the things he built, the minds he touched, the faith he held dear, and the family he cherished above all else. He may have finished his final chapter here, but the story he wrote will be read for generations to come.

An even bigger, eternal thank you goes to his wife, Linda Potter, for her unfailing devotion, for remaining steadfastly by his side, and for providing him with truly exceptional care until the very end.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Lava Hot Springs Cemetery, 11242 South Dempsey Creek Road, Lava Hot Springs, ID 83246. A viewing will be held half an hour prior.
