Lurlene Theresa Frey-Haag, born October 31, 1940, died July 20, 2025, of a sudden illness.
She was born in Marksville, LA where she lived until she was five years old, speaking only French. She then moved to Idaho with her parents, Verda Joffrion and Ralph Frey, along with her brother, Barney.
She went to school in Pocatello, graduating from Pocatello High School in 1959. She was active on the Indianette’s dance team and cherished her high school memories. She looked forward to attending her class reunions and maintaining many cherished friendships throughout her life.
She married her high school sweetheart, Dennis Lords, and together they had five children. That marriage ended in divorce. Later, she met and married her love, Arnold Haag. They had a whirlwind courtship and got married within a few weeks of meeting each other. Together, they built a beautiful life. They took great pride in their home and yard. She loved to have lush green grass and a yard full of beautiful flowers.
She had a deep love for music and performance. Throughout her life, she was happiest when she was in the spotlight. She performed for several years with the Pocatello Sweet Adelines and later discovered a passion for playing the organ. What began with a small keyboard led to her owning a series of fancy Lowry organs. She practiced diligently, then joined an organ class for seniors at the Piano Gallery. She proudly shared her talent with her family. One cherished Christmas memory was when she gave her family CDs of her playing Christmas carols. Even after losing much of her hearing and developing arthritis in her fingers, she still looked forward to her weekly organ class at Piano Gallery, until they ended due to Covid.
Lurlene’s Catholic faith was extremely important to her. She worked at St. Anthony Parish as a secretary for nearly 20 years. It was more than a job to her; it became her life. It was a role that gave her purpose as well as cherished friendships and community. She loved attending Mass, singing in the choir, and even joined the Spanish choir!
Lurlene is survived by her three daughters: LaNette (Ron) Shipley, Jeanette (Ron) Edwards, and Christina Lords. She is also survived by grandchildren: Shauna Sotelo, Hannah Ireland, Tiffani Bruderer, Madison Betty, Hunter Betty, Jaycee Turner, Dallas and Brooklyn Edwards, and Jonathan Wakly; great grandchildren: Sammy, Shanese, Isaiah and Marissa Sotelo, as well as Canyon and Noah Bruderer and Everette Betty and Mira and Nora Ireland. She was joyfully awaiting the arrival of two more great-grandbabies due later this year. She is survived by her sisters, Sandi (Jay) Lenker, Debi (Thom) Markey and sister-in-law, Jeanette Frey.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arnold Haag; sons, Kenny and Darren; grandchildren, ShyAnn, Bryan, Theresa and Adalynn, as well as her brother, Barney; nephew, Brandon; her parents, and so many friends and family. Despite experiencing tremendous loss throughout her life, Lurlene remained cheerful and kind-hearted. Her positivity, joy and faith were constant sources of strength and inspiration to those around her.
Our family would like to acknowledge a few individuals that were such a significant part of her life and made sure she was taken care of: Rodney Pfeifer, who was her reliable handyman and was always there when she needed him; Mary Lattimore, who sat with her for hours upon hours sharing the Eucharist with her and listening to her stories, and most importantly, being her friend in Christ; and to her high school classmates, Dixie and Lamar Robinson, who took her out to dinner just a few weeks ago.
Services will be held through Wilks Funeral Home on Chubbuck Rd. A viewing will take place at 6:00 pm followed by a Celebration of her amazing life at 7:00 pm on Thursday, July 24, 2025. A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 25th at 10:00am at St. Anthony’s Chapel 524 N. 7th.
At a later date, the family will lay her urn to rest along with her husband’s, at their sons’ gravesite.
Knowing how much mom adored flowers, her family is ensuring she is surrounded by their beauty in abundance. In lieu of additional floral arrangements, contributions toward her funeral expenses through Wilks would be deeply appreciated.
