Pocatello

Marlene JoAn Alvord Christensen peacefully passed away at Caring Hearts Assisted Living in Pocatello, Idaho on Monday, August 5, 2024.

Marlene was born on April 8, 1931, to H. Jack and Laura Nuffer Alvord in Preston, Idaho. Marlene was the oldest of two daughters. She lived in Preston for most of her early childhood, except for a brief time when she lived in Los Angeles, California. Most of her childhood memories were of growing up on the family farm surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a lot of animals. Marlene was a talented little girl and was always on her church or community stage, performing both in song and dance.

When Marlene was in 6th Grade, her family moved to Pocatello, Idaho, where she lived the remainder of her life. She attended Washington Elementary School, Franklin Junior High School, and Pocatello High School. Marlene loved going to school and excelled in English, especially creative writing, music, and art. She was a member of Girl’s Council and other clubs.

At the end of WWII, Marlene met her eternal companion of 69 years, H. LaMar Christensen, when he returned from serving honorably in the U.S. Navy. They were married for time and for all eternity in the L.D.S. Idaho Falls Temple on November 25, 1947. Their union was blessed with three children; a son, Cary LaMar, and two daughters, Mari Jan and Laurie Ann.

Marlene was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her life. She served in many positions in the Sunday School, Primary, Young Women’s Program, and the Relief Society. Her service included being a Primary President, a Young Women’s President, and a Relief Society President. Marlene participated in the Singing Mothers Choir. She received four Individual Service Awards for her dedication to her church callings.

For several years, Marlene worked part-time at Sears in their customer service department.

One of Marlene’s favorite places was the cabin that she and LaMar built in Bear Lake, Idaho. Many years of fond memories were made there for the entire family.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a granddaughter, and a son in law.

She is survived by her sister, Jacquelyn Alvord; her three children, Cary Christensen (Dawn), Mari Munk (Bruce), Laurie McNamara (Francis); nine grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

Private funeral services in Marlene’s memory will be held for her immediate family on Saturday, August 10, 2024. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
