In Loving Memory of Mary Serigstad Root

September 13, 1949 – July 4, 2026

On July 4, 2026, Mary Serigstad Root has set off on what must surely be her most grand adventure yet, leaving behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, and miles traveled.

Born on September 13, 1949, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and adopted by Ethel May and Ray Winslow, Mary spent her childhood between Fargo and Minneapolis before graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1971. After graduating Mary’s next chapter began with a simple plan to spend a year in Sun Valley as a ski bum, which turned into a lifetime. She began working for Sun Valley Company at the Continental, moved to Sun Valley Travels and then decided to purchase it, and spent approximately 15 years doing what she loved most, helping others discover the world. For Mary, travel wasn’t just about destinations; it was about creating memories, broadening horizons, and encouraging people to say “yes” to adventure.

Mary never lost her adventurous spirit. She loved skiing fresh powder, hiking mountain trails, biking with friends, or planning her next journey, she embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. She believed the best souvenirs were the stories you brought home and the people you met along the way.

Her 25 year marriage gave Mary her daughter Alyssa and brought her step son Jon into her life. Mary is survived by Alyssa and Jon (Tiffany); grandsons Tyler and Jack Root (Ady); her two adored great-granddaughters, Aurora and Elena, her niece MaryAnn and her nephew Scott and their children. She delighted in her family and was endlessly proud of each of them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ethel May and Ray Winslow; her sister, Judy Birch; and her brother-in-law Tom Birch.

Mary lived with an open heart, an adventurous soul, and the rare ability to make the world feel both bigger and more welcoming. She reminded those around her that life is meant to be explored, wine is meant to drink, that memories are life’s greatest treasures, and that there’s always room for one more trip.

Though her final journey has taken her beyond our reach, we imagine she’s already found the best scenic route.

In honor of Mary, take the trip you’ve been putting off, wander somewhere new, call someone you love, and never stop collecting stories. She certainly didn’t.
