Michael Clair Kunz

Michael Clair Kunz, 71, passed away on July 23, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with COPD, at Portneuf Medical Center, surrounded by the love of his family.

Mike was born on February 28, 1955, in Montpelier, Idaho, to Clair and Beverly Hill Kunz. He was raised with a strong work ethic and a love for family, values that would guide him throughout his life.

Mike graduated from Bear Lake High School in 1973 and went on to attend the Idaho State University Diesel Mechanic Program. He discovered his passion for mechanics at a young age and was rebuilding and repairing vehicles long before his teenage years. Family members often recalled spending countless hours beside him, handing him tools as he worked on his latest project.

Mike made a career doing what he loved most. As a skilled diesel mechanic, he earned the respect of coworkers and customers alike through his expertise, dedication, and problem-solving abilities. During his tenure with Modern Machinery, where he was affectionally known as, "Modern Mikey," one of his proudest accomplishments was participating in the three-week field assembly of the massive Komatsu PC4000 mining shovel in Nevada, a project that showcased both his technical skill and commitment to excellence.

On June 3, 1989, Mike married the love of his life, Cyndra Ann Johnson. Together they built a life centered on family, adventure, and enduring love. Mike previously married to Lucille Prescott, and although that marriage later ended in divorce, he remained devoted to the family he helped create.

Mike had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and spent many happy days hunting, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling, boating, camping, and riding side-by-sides. He found peace in nature and cherished every opportunity to share those experiences with family and friends. He also took great pride in gardening and became well known among family and neighbors for his remarkable tomato and pepper harvests.

Above all else, Mike loved his children and grandchildren. He was a steadfast source of encouragement and support through life's trials and triumphs, always willing to lend a helping hand, offer thoughtful advice, or simply be present when needed.

Mike was ordained an Elder in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prior to first marriage and carried the values of faith, service, and integrity throughout his life.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Cyndra Ann Kunz; his children, Travis Kunz, Kimberly Knutter, Alyssa Kunz, and Ashley Kunz; His grandchildren, Skyler Beckmann, Michael Knutter, Kevrin Knutter, Brayden Knutter, Rhain Wells, and Marley Wells; his brother, Clair Kunz; and his sisters, Tina Price, Robin Melton, and Patti Jessen. He leaves behind many extended family members, lifelong friends, and colleagues who will remember his generosity, craftsmanship, sense of humor, and unwavering love for those around him.

A funeral service will be held at Wilks Colonial Chapel, 2005 S 4th Avenue, Pocatello, ID, with a viewing at 1:00 p.m. and funeral services at 2:00 p.m. Graveside services will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, 1520 S 5th Avenue, Pocatello, ID. Family and friends are then invited to a light memorial reception beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the Wood River Room of the Pond Student Union Building on the Idaho State University campus, 1065 South 8th Ave, Pocatello 

Mike's legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the countless machines he brought back to life, and the many lives he touched through his kindness, hard work, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
