Michael David Sheets

February 25, 1986 — September 22, 2025

Pocatello

Michael David Sheets, 39, passed away in Pocatello, Idaho, surrounded by mountains, open skies, and the community he loved.

Born on February 25, 1986, in San Diego, California, Michael grew up playing soccer, cheering for the Padres and Chargers, and participating in technical theatre at Rocklin High School, where he discovered a talent for building, fixing, and creating behind the scenes.

A devoted brother and son, loyal friend, and lover of the great outdoors, Michael had strong opinions and even stronger hugs. A lifelong NASCAR fan, he embodied an all-American spirit and took great pride in his country. He delighted in big breakfasts, dogs of all sizes, amusement parks, and playing disc golf. He also loved cooking—especially experimenting with unique seasonings and recipes—and would often recount elaborate meals that took all day to prepare.

Michael proudly served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard from 2003 to 2015. He deployed overseas in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He carried out two demanding missions, one as a Combat Engineer and the other as a Bridge Crewmember. Known for his reliability, technical skill, and willingness to serve alongside others in difficult conditions, Michael earned numerous decorations recognizing his courage, dedication, and professionalism. A full list of distinctions and significant experience appears below.

He carried that same dedication into his civilian life. Most recently, Michael began a new role at Alameda Middle School in Pocatello, Idaho, where he oversaw the school’s facilities and built warm connections with staff and students. Before that, he worked in inventory management and shipping for a manufacturing firm, which moved him from Rocklin, CA to Post Falls, ID. Whether assembling intricate parts, crafting handmade Christmas gifts, or tending school grounds, Michael took pride in a job well done.

Guided by faith and service, Michael always sought out church communities—wherever he lived and even while deployed overseas—looking for fellowship and connection.

Michael also loved teaching others and sharing his skills, eager to show people the ropes. His younger brother remembers spending countless hours together “talking about everything and nothing,” knowing that even a short conversation left them both fulfilled.

Michael is survived by his parents, Tim and Becky Sheets; siblings Jonathan Sheets, Elizabeth and Mark Orcutt, and Alissa Sheets; grandmother Kay Sheets; aunts and uncles Jeff and Joan Sheets, Robbin and Rachel Sheets, Joe and Cindy Garcia, and Irene Kilmer; loads of cousins, and his beloved Pickering family.

He will be remembered for his service, his kindness, his craftsmanship, and his enduring love of life’s simple pleasures. A private service will be held with family. In lieu of gifts, please consider a donation to the American Red Cross or the United Service Organizations (USO) in Michael’s honor.
