Michael Todd Petty

Jul 15, 1964 — Oct 21, 2026

Pensacola, Florida

Michael Todd Petty, lovingly known to his grandchildren as Papa, passed away on October 21, 2026, at his home in Pensacola, Florida. He was 62 years old.

Born on July 15, 1964, in Pocatello, Idaho, Michael grew up amid the mountains of the West, where he developed a lifelong love for his hometown and for the slopes he skied so skillfully in his younger years. Michael graduated from Highland High School in 1982. He returned to Idaho often throughout his life to visit family and reconnect with the place that shaped him.

Michael devoted much of his life to the service of his country. He joined the Navy just after graduating high school. He would proudly serve in the United States Navy for 26 years, attaining the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer before his retirement in 2009. His commitment to service did not end there. He continued to give of himself through 16 years of civil service at NAS Pensacola, a testament to his extraordinary work ethic and the deep pride he took in his work and in teaching others.

Those who knew Michael remember a man of remarkable warmth and humor. He had a rare gift for making anyone he spoke with feel like the most important person in the room. His laughter, his kindness, and his genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path. A passionate sports fan, Michael cheered faithfully for the Dallas Cowboys, the Atlanta Braves, the Texas Longhorns, and the Auburn Tigers, and enjoyed following NASCAR as well. He loved country music and spent many happy evenings dancing with his beautiful wife, Tracy. He was a member of the Aviation Boatswain's Mate Association, a community that reflected his enduring bond with his fellow sailors. Above all, Michael was a devoted family man whose love for his wife, children, and grandchildren defined his life. His family was at the center of his world, and he never missed an opportunity to show it. He took immense pride in his children and grandchildren and was always their loudest cheerleader, greatest encourager, and most steadfast supporter.

He is survived by his wife, Tracy; daughter, Megan Gaydos (Nick); son, Joshua Petty (Taylor); his stepchildren, Christine Berry, Candice Roberts, and John Burggraf; his mother, Josalyn Petty; sister, Traci Lambson (Garth), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Caroline, Selah, Owen, Kaylen, and Ella. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Lee Petty and beloved great aunt Ida Tanner.

A man of quiet faith, Michael lived out his Christian values through his devotion to his family, his dedication to his country, and his steady kindness toward others. May he now rest in the peace of the Lord he trusted.

The funeral will be held on November 3rd at Faith Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory. The day will begin at 10:30 a.m. with visitation for immediate family, followed by public visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 12:00 p.m. At 1:00 p.m., the procession will travel to the cemetery, where burial with full military honors will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Barrancas National Cemetery on NAS Pensacola.

Michael's life was one of love, laughter and service, a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who knew him. To a devoted sailor, husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and Papa, we offer our final farewell: Fair Winds and Following Seas.
