Robert Earl Dawson, a proud patriot, veteran, and friend, passed away on April 3, 2026, at the age of 77. Born in Indianapolis, IN, Robert spent the majority of his life in Pocatello, Idaho, where he built a legacy of service, camaraderie, and honesty.
Robert (fondly referred to as Red or Buddy) was a father to two daughters, Helen and Yutonna, and a stepfather to Coby and Keston Lewis. He was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren. In addition to his children and grandchildren, he is survived by nine siblings. He was predeceased by his parents, one sister, and his beloved wife, Gaylene Dawson, who was the love of his life who he selflessly cared for after a stroke limited her ability to care for herself.
As a proud veteran of the Vietnam War, Robert served his country with honor. His military service was an integral part of who he was, and he remained active in local veterans’ organizations, including the Pocatello Honor Guard, where he served with great pride for many years. He always looked happiest in uniform, and he cherished the opportunity to share his war stories with fellow veterans and anyone willing to listen.
Robert worked for many years as a certified nurse’s aid, and a flagger for a road construction crew, and he was well known for his dedication to his work. In his downtime, he enjoyed going for drives, motorcycle rides, camping, hunting, and four-wheeling. He especially loved fly fishing—though his friends and family often joked that few had seen him catch anything. Regardless, Robert was passionate about the sport, finding peace in nature and the quiet moments by the water.
Known for his fiery personality and no-nonsense approach to life, Robert was honest to a fault and never afraid to speak his mind. While his directness could be polarizing, those who knew him loved his authenticity, his loyalty, and his deep sense of humor. His presence was larger than life, and he will be remembered fondly for the stories he told, the laughs he shared, and the love he gave.
A memorial service including military honors will be held at Wilks Funeral Home in Chubbuck, Idaho, on April 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM. A graveside dedication will follow at Georgetown Cemetery at 2:00 PM.
Robert’s memory will live on through his family, friends, and the countless veterans whose lives he touched.
