"The Rose That Came Alive
I recall when I started school. I was six years old. My parents didn’t take interest in my education because they drank and fought. The children made fun of because I wore glasses, wasn’t clean, and my clothes were too big and ugly. My shoes were women’s high heels.
When my mother left my dad and us children, we move from Missouri to Chico, California, to be with my grandparents. I enrolled in the sixth grade. My teachers realized that I could not keep up so I was put in special education.
One day I came home from school, the welfare agent was there and I was put with my aunt and uncle. They took no interest in my education, so I was put in another foster home where I went to high school. Grandma Knooxs did take interest in me.
I quit school in 1963 because it was too hard for me to keep up with my studies. I met my husband, we got married in 1994. I enrolled in beauty academy and got my 2000 hours. However, I didn’t graduate.
I had a good life, however I was discouraged and didn’t care what happened to me. I just sat and watched television and drank coke all day.
In 1995, my husband got sick with cancer. That’s when I realized I had to do something with my life. At age fifty-one I learned to drive and now am the only driver in the family, along with my responsibilities of taking care of finances, and two handicapped children.
A good friend helped me to know I would make a good counselor, to help people with their problems similar to my own. For this, I would have to get my G.E.D. and get further training. I started night school on April 3, 1995, however, that was not enough for me, so I started going during the day.
At A.B.E. I met Norma Jean, who is my English teacher and Dawn who is my math teacher, and good friends of who I love.
When I first started, I didn’t know how to subtract, multiply, and divide. I went home crying because I thought I was a dummy. One day, I asked Dawn if I could get a tutor, she checked for me. The next day, a math tutor called, he met at A.B.E. However, I found out he was a better English tutor so I kept him as my English tutor.
I went to Connie who is in charge of the tutoring program. She introduced me to Vern, a math tutor. I called him that afternoon and met him at the Public Library at 3:00 p.m. He taught me how to do fractions, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, factor, prime numbers, and decimals. Vern is talented, understanding, and a wonderful friend and supportive. He recently got married and stopped being my tutor.
Glen is my English tutor. He taught me many different things: replacing words, synonyms, spelling, adverbs, verbs, nouns, word building, etc. He is supportive of me and an outstanding person, a wonderful friend.
I asked for tutoring services because I wanted more help.
I would like to thank my family, especially my husband, for standing by me, being supportive, having dinner ready when I came home. Without him it would have been impossible to get my G.E.D. and I want him to know how much I love and appreciate him.
I worked hard to get where I am. I feel I have been successful but without my teachers and tutors in my life, I never would have accomplished what I have."
