It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Shauna Marie Peterson “Buttercup” on July 1, 2026. Shauna was deeply loved by both family and community.

Shauna was born to James and Darleen Nelson in Moab, Utah on July 28, 1970. She graduated from Grand County High and later attended the University of Utah.

Shauna was a lifelong learner and a huge nerd who loved clever jokes (she was fluent in sarcasm), great fiction, and playing games with her friends. She was a great teacher, chef, seamstress, board game designer, and a compassionate listener.

Of her many accomplishments, her son, Jay Dilley, was her most cherished. She loved being a mom and was very excited to be Grandma Buttercup to her first grandchild, Marcy.

Shauna survived by husband, Dave, son Jay and Danny (whom she loved as her own), granddaughter Marcy, Father James Nelson, brothers Jim (Elizabeth) and Eric (Trish), sister Shirley (Duane), an abundance of nieces and nephews, and a large host of fellow gamers at Black Dragon Games.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Shauna on August 1st from 11am to 3pm at rock Creek Park. Please join us to share memories, laugh, and enjoy some of her favorite foods!
