Obituary

After 68 years of embracing life to the fullest, Shawna Jean Childs passed away on July 22, 2026.

Shawna was born on October 26, 1957, to Dean Mason and Donna Riach Mason.

She loved telling stories about growing up with her siblings, her dad's magic tricks, the family go-karts, and her brother's classic car projects.

After graduating from Twin Falls High School in 1976, Shawna worked at JC Penney, D&B Supply, and the Forest Service. She also cleaned houses, where she made lifelong friends, and later joined the family business at the Renter Center.

It was while working for the Forest Service that she met the love of her life, Jim Childs. They were married on February 5, 1982, and later welcomed their daughter, Jami Dawn.

Shawna loved crafting and won many awards for her cross-stitch work and handmade afghans. Over the years, she designed and gifted countless beautiful blankets that will bring warmth to family and friends for generations to come.

One of her favorite Christmas traditions was spending a day with her daughter and granddaughter making gingerbread houses, decorating the Christmas tree, and baking sugar cookies—carefully coloring festive shapes with her special homemade frosting.

But perhaps her most heartfelt work developed over many years of patience and practice when she discovered scrapbooking. Her scrapbooks are true works of art, filled with love that will be treasured for generations to come. From beautifully documenting her family's lives to creating breathtaking wedding albums for her daughter, Shawna had a remarkable gift for preserving life's moments and turning memories into stories.

At the time of her passing, she was making Christmas gifts for family members and working on a very special afghan for her beloved granddaughter, Aspen Jeanette Whited.

From the moment she first held Aspen in 2009 until their final hug goodbye, Shawna and Aspen shared an extraordinary bond. Aspen was the light of “Fishin’ Grandma’s” eyes, and they cherished every moment they spent together.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who reached out to Shawna during her final days. She was one of those rare people who always worried more about everyone else than herself and genuinely wanted the very best for those she loved.

Even while facing fear and uncertainty, she was genuinely excited to see family and friends, embracing every conversation, enjoying every laugh, and cherishing every moment, knowing that any goodbye might be her last. Mom refused to spend her final moments in a hospital and left this world exactly as she always hoped—at home, in the comfort of her husband's loving arms.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Jim Childs; her faithful black lab, Liberty Bell; her daughter, Jami (Jason) Whited; her cherished granddaughter, Aspen; her siblings; brothers- and sisters-in-law; Jason’s family, whom she loved dearly; several aunts and uncles; cousins; nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and many beloved family members.
