Sonja Marie Jensen Hancock passed away peacefully on June 29, 2025, in her home, surrounded by her loving family—closing a life marked by quiet strength, unwavering faith, and Christlike love. She was 87 years old.
Sonja was the daughter of Ejnar Kjeldgaard Jensen and Janna Franciska Johansen. She was the beloved wife of Gene Hancock and a devoted mother to three children: Pam Ward (Karl Ward), Susan Herrud (Larry Herrud), and Tad Hancock. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Her life was rooted in family, love, and faith, and she was a steady and inspiring example to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Born and raised in Pocatello, Idaho, Sonja attended Pocatello High School. She loved the water and worked as a lifeguard at Ross Park Pool. She participated in Spinderella with her daughters until the age of 80. She and Gene enjoyed many bike rides together around Tyhee. Sonja enjoyed sewing, quilting, and a wonderful cook.
Sonja and Gene were married for nearly 68 years and were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple. Together, they built a beautiful life centered on faith, family, and service. They enjoyed float trips down the Salmon River with friends, scenic drives to Yellowstone, and a special trip to Denmark and Norway with their daughters, where Sonja reconnected with her extended family.
A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sonja served as Relief Society President, Young Women’s President, and a devoted ministering sister. Alongside Gene, she served as a mission president in the Ohio Columbus Mission from 1993 to 1996, and later in the Idaho Falls Temple for many years. Her quiet leadership and love for those she served left a lasting legacy.
Sonja taught by example, and many in her family often asked themselves, “What would Sonja do?” Her greatest joy was found in her family. Her sense of humor, her cookies, her treasure hunts, the Christmas programs, and family gatherings will be deeply missed.
Her next chapter is only beginning, and those who love her find peace in knowing she is joyfully reunited with loved ones, especially her dear parents—and that families are forever.
