Steven Earl Larson

November 27, 1960 — July 24, 2025

Pocatello

Steven Earl Larson, 64, passed away on Thursday, July 24, 2025, on a beautiful summer morning, fishing with his grandson. Born on November 27, 1960, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Willard and Janice Whiting Larson, Steve lived a life marked by curiosity, passion, humor, and unwavering love for his family.

Steve grew up in southeast Idaho and attended schools in both Pocatello and Aberdeen. He was a farm boy at heart and cherished his years of adventure and hard work on the family farm in Springfield, forging friendships that lasted a lifetime. After high school, with a desire to serve his country, Steve enlisted in the National Guard.

He developed a sharp technical mind and a lifelong love of learning. After years in appliance repair, he transitioned to teaching electronics. As an instructor at the College of Technology at Idaho State University, he mentored and inspired countless students, earning a reputation as a caring teacher and trusted guide.

Steve was married to Kathy Kirby, with whom he shared the joy of raising their son, Jake. He was later married to Glenna Harrold. Though both marriages ended, they remained meaningful chapters in his life.

As a youth, Steve was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held a lifelong belief in Jesus Christ and, in the years leading up to his passing, experienced a deep spiritual reawakening and reconnection with God.

He was always fun to be around—genuine, charismatic, and full of life. He could make an entire room laugh, but his best jokes were whispered to the person next to him. Known for his giving spirit, he was always willing to help strangers and friends alike however he could.

He also made headlines—literally—after being struck by lightning while golfing, an event that earned him the nickname “Flash” for several memorable years.

Steve had a bit of a wild side, which made his stories legendary. Yet he was also patient, forgiving, and deeply grounded. Known for his thriftiness (he never paid full price for anything), Steve was a master tinkerer who could fix, build, or repurpose just about anything. While others saw a used treadmill, Steve saw a rock tumbler—or a jerry-rigged wind generator.

He was patriotic, adventurous, and most at peace outdoors.

Steve is survived by his son, Jake (Kelsee) Larson, and his cherished grandchildren: Landon, Macee, and Nashville—all of Pocatello. He is also survived by his mother, Janice Whiting Larson; and his siblings: Vicki (Kent) Hobbs and Lyle Larson, both of Pocatello; Amy (Daniel) Clark of Osgood; and Neal (Esther) Larson of Idaho Falls. He is also remembered fondly by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willard Larson, and two brothers, Cliff and Kent.

He also leaves behind his two treasured dogs and constant companions, Max and Tootsie.

Steve will be missed deeply by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 8th. The graveside service will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Springfield-Spencer Cemetery (1900 W 800 S, Springfield ID 83277), followed by a picnic dinner and remembrance program at 6:30 p.m. at Springfield Park, by the lakeside.

Memories and condolences may be shared in the guestbook below.
