The sun rose on January 23, 1943, to Cater and Osie Carroll, welcoming into the world a man who would live a life defined by faith, service, generosity, and deep love for his family.
William “Bill” Carroll, Sr. attended Pocatello High School and, in May 1961, proudly joined the United States Air Force, where he honorably served his country. During his service, he flew an aircraft known as the Jolly Green Giant, a role he carried out with pride, honor, and quiet strength. His sense of duty and steady courage followed him throughout his life.
A God-fearing man, Bill loved the Lord and faithfully attended church whenever his health allowed. His faith was not loud, but it was lived—shown daily through kindness, humility, and a giving heart. Known for his generosity, joy, and gentle humor, Bill found happiness in feeding others, sharing stories, and bringing laughter into any room. If he was quiet, those who knew him understood he wasn’t feeling well—yet he never complained.
Bill was a devoted husband, father, and protector of his family. He loved all of his children wholeheartedly, leading with patience, guidance, and a steady presence that made those around him feel safe and supported. He would tell you that on July 2, 2008, “I married the most beautiful woman in the world”—his beloved bride, Florence, the love of his life and constant companion. He took great pride in the life they built together, always placing family at the center of everything he did.
A respected and active Master Mason, Bill was raised and made a Master Mason at Piney Grove Lodge #585 F&AM.; He was elevated to the 33rd Degree and served as Grand Master, carrying his responsibilities with honor, humility, and dedication with the Pride of Georgia Grand Lodge. While he was deeply proud of his Masonic and military accomplishments, he was most proud of his family.
Bill leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Florence Watson; five daughters and two sons: Kaleta Askew (Michael Askew), William L. Carroll, Jr. (Geneva Carroll), Amber Horton (Lance Horton), Verlesia W. Thompson (Reginald Thompson), Lynn W. Miller, Stephanie W. Reed (Milton Reed), and Damond Coles; along with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and a host of relatives and friends.
He is also survived by his sisters and brothers: Mary (John) Williams, Jessie McKinney, Johnnie (Miranda) Carroll, and Cater (Priscilla) Carroll.
He was preceded in death by his beloved baby sister, Jessie “Phine” Michael, and Marie “Bessie” Carroll.
Bill’s legacy is one of faith, laughter, service, and love—a life well lived and deeply cherished.
“Faith in God, love for family, and service to others–this was his life.”
